LAURENE STARK From Descndents of Frank Stark by Waneta R.Stark page 89
Laurene was the 12th of the thirteen children of Frank and Sarah.Born and raised in the old home in LaSalle, she grew up learning all thenecessary things of life: cooking, sewing, caring for theanimals, andhelping out on the farm wherever she could. Sarah was gone from thehouse one day,

leaving Laurene and her younger sister, Frances, alone. The two girlsdecided that they would help their mother with the chores, like milkingthe cows. With buckets in hand, they proceeded to the field. Afterchoosing a cow and setting to their task, they soon found out thatmilking was not as easy as it looked. Neither could produce a drop ofmilk. So back to the house they trudged. When Sarah got home, she had todo the milking anyway. They guessed they didn't quite know everythingabout farm living.
Laurene met a young man from Risingsun, Ohio and married him on avery cold day in January at St. Joseph Church in Erie, Michigan. Hisname was Gabriel Bushroe. Joseph BusI. oe

was his father and his mother was a Reau.
All the skill of sewing was greatly needed as Laurene and Gabrielraised nine children. Laurene loved to cook and enjoyed experimenting, which did not easily 'go down' with the children. She played the violinas a young child in school and continued to delight her family withmusical selections until the violin finally went whacky.
Gabe was always a mechanic, a carpenter, a farmer. After gettinghome from his regular job every day, he'd work on his grapes andberries. He owned ToledoFort Wayne Truck Lines with his two brothers;Gabe and Silas in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Edward in Toledo, Ohio. Theydid mechanical work

on the trucks themselves. Gabe built his own refrigerator trucks whichultimately led to the emphysema that caused his early death.
The three brothers sold their truck lines business in 1946 toShipper's Dispatch, Inc. of Toledo. Gabe held a job with this firm untilhis health failed in 1955.
Laurene and Gabe were both quiet people, preferring to stay homewith their children and grandchildren, than to go out. They lived inMonroe County most of their lives. Upon dying in his home at the earlyage of 64, it was Gabe's wish that his body be taken to the Universityof Michigan Medical

Science Dept., Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a member of St. Joseph Churchin Erie, Michigan.
Laurene died in October of 1973 of bronchial pneumonia and wasburied in St. Joseph Cemetery. She was a member of St. Joseph Church,Auxiliary Erie Post 3925, and a Gold Star Mother.

1. Sterling J. BUSHROE, born on 02111926 in Erie, died on 11091951 in MIA in Korea with US Aairforce at the age of 24. LT. STERLING J. BUSHROE From Descendants of frank Stark by WanetaR. Stark Page 103
Little boys have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up.Sterling was no exception. Sometimes, while playing outside, he'd stopand look at the sky, his eyes searching for the tiny, silver plane sofar above him. The sound of a passing plane always seemed to catch hisear. He'd stay watching until the sound of the engines were no longeraudible, the silver bird gone from sight. "SomedayI'll be up there, flying a big plane." His dream. But unlike most young boys, his dreamwas not soon forgotten.
He attended St. Peter's Grade School and Central Catholic HighSchool, both in Toledo, Ohio, graduating in 1944. Before entering theAir Force in 1945, Sterling held a private pilot's license, sometimesskipping school to take his flying lessons. He was released once fromthe service but reenlisted in 1949.
Before leaving for Korea, his parents, Gabriel and Laurene Bushroe, went to San Francisco to see him off. They were so proud of him, doingwith his life what he always wanted to do. The newly commissioned secondlieutenant flew forty missions in Korea, then was promoted to firstlieutenant.
On September 11, 1951, as he was completing his 53rd mission,Sterling and three other pilots were attacked and Sterling's F80 washit in the first pass. The other pilots saw him bail out and start tofloat earthward in his parachute. After that he was lost in a heavyground haze. That was the last he was seen.
Mr. and Mrs. Bushroe received word that their oldest son, just 25years old, was missing in action over Myogo, Korea. A ray of hope cameto them through an unconfirmed report from the United Nation commandthat Sterling was a prisoner of Communist forces in Korea. They wereextremely

disappointed, though, when his name was not listed on the Communist listof prisoners that was released.
The Distinguished:Flying Cross was accepted by Laurene and Gabrielon October 16, 1952 for their son. The citation was awarded for heroicaction against the enemy, August 31, 1951. Lt. Bushroe disregardedintense antiaircraft fire to destroy an enemy locomotive in NorthKorea. According to the citation, he flew southward to wreck a string ofboxcars with rockets and a large supply vehicle with strafing fire. Hewas shot down eleven days later.
Serving in our country's military service has always been a sourceof pride for the servicemen and their families. Being American citizens,we are born with freedom a natural part of our lives. Sometimes wetake it for granted, never thinking what life would be like without it.It is for this very coveted freedom that we have lost many men in warsin other countries. We gratefully acknowledge with pride those who havedied, especially Sterling, and others in our family who have foughtunder our flag. To them, we say: "Thank you"'
